In April 2008, the status of Japanese whisky as among the best in the world was confirmed when a Yoichi 1987 20 year old single malt whisky (produced by Nikka) won the overall prize for best blended whisky in the world and a 30 year old Hibiki blend (made by Suntory) won the overall prize for best blended whisky in the world. The judges described the winning drink as "a dense Dr Pepper or Vimto with an aroma that explodes with water", " an amazing mix of big smoke and sweet black currant" and "liquid dessert."
Even though it may be very difficult to find out how good the Yoichi was, since the exact 1987 chill-filtered variety has already been sold out, you will be pleased to know that the Nikka's 20 year old single malt whisky is now available at the Makki Lounge at J-Sekka.
So, for the Serious Whisky lovers, do not forget to head over to Makki Lounge during your ski holiday in Niseko...or if you want to take a break from skiing, make a trip out to the Nikka Whisky Distilleries (only about 1 hour by train).
