Sapporo Day TripFor those looking to experience a proper Japanese city, Sapporo is it! With innumerable restaurants and shops, the city offers something to suit every taste. Approximately two and a half hours by bus or alternatively a train ride from nearby Kutchan via Otaru, Sapporo has a number of shopping centres as well as a long outdoor pedestrian walkway-home of the famous Yuki Matsuri (Ice Festival). tours to Sapporo and nearby Otaru are popular particularly during ice festival time in early February. |
Rusutsu
Rusutsu lies an hour away from Niseko Hirafu.
In recent years the Rusutsu ski resort has been gaining acclaim as a tree skiing mecca that offers steep deep powder snow. Long perfectly groomed runs intertwine between ridges and valleys for those who like to remain on-piste, whilst consistent fall lines take skiers through challenging natural terrain and heavily wooded trees for the off-piste enthusiasts.
The Rusutsu ski resort is spread across three peaks; East Mountain, West Mountain and Mt. Isola. East Mountain is ideal for beginners and families. West Mountain houses the terrain park and Mt Isola has its extensive tree skiing and off-piste runs.
Rusutsu is only a short 30 minutes drive from Niseko and should also be considered if you are looking for something new.
Kokusai
Kokusai is a small resort with the entire resort accessed from one 8 passenger gondola. Despite its size, Kokusai has a surprising amount of varied terrain and a laid back attitude to off-piste skiing all day long.
As an added bonus, Kokusai sees a different weather pattern than the Niseko range and often offers great conditions when Niseko and Rusutsu are tracked out so if you are already in Niseko and conditions aren't perfect, a day trip to Kousai would be the way to go.
